Ever Quest 2 was the game that most influenced my work during my time as a graduate student. My thesis and my final work as a student reflected my identity as both Taja, a Warden, and Thiravia, a Dirge.
Raiding
I had been playing the game for a while on and off and had taste of raiding from other guilds I had been involved in. Although Taja has always been my "main" online identity, Thiravia was born as a result of the Warden class not being as desirable for this. Eventually Thiravia was accepted into a guild named Elysium, the top guild on the Crushbone server at the time, and so I entered the world of hardcore gaming.
For a little over a year my life was logging in 5 days a week at 8pm for the daily raids and also for contested monsters that we needed to kill before any other guild. They were my friends, my family. Their problems were my problems, and their successes were mine as well. We were looked up to and looked down upon by other guilds. We were not the best worldwide but we were the best on the server, and that was good enough for me. I became absorbed into the drama that was online gaming. As a justification to my time, it became performance art to me. I began documenting everything I did. Audio, video, images, text logs, etc, I was not sure how I was going to make this into art, but knowing I would find a way, I had to make sure I had sufficient material.
Because of my Photoshop ability, I was put in charge for a while in updating the "front page" of the guild's website every time we killed a new boss. It was a way to show off to other guilds how good you were. Click the gallery labeled "Raiding" below to view some of the "front pages"
